Biography

Zelda G Night is a Professor of Psychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Johannesburg. She is a registered Counselling Psychologist and a NRF Rated Scientist, and in November 2015, she was a 'Visiting Scholar' to the University of Valencia, Spain. Supervision of research has always been within the qualitative and case studies paradigm and located within the phenomenological-psychological research discourse, and to this end, three of her doctoral students have submitted their work for examination using this paradigm and should graduate in 2017. Her recent Master's students are doing psychobiographical research. She was always been actively involved in the development of psychotherapy, and in this regard, recently she was elected Vice-President of the World Council for Psychotherapy (WCP) (African Chapter) which is a global organization that brings together all five continents in terms of their promotion of psychotherapy and mental well-being. In 2014, a few of them from the African Chapter of the WCP organized a World Psychotherapy Congress in Durban, which attracted 52 countries from around the world. Part of her professional work also involves being a reviewer for six local and international academic journals, and she has extensive experience of being an External Examiner for both Master's and Doctoral theses. She is a current External Examiner for all Master's in Psychology training programmes at UKZN and University of Namibia. Briefly, her academic history is that she is a graduate of Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, where she obtained her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree and three post-graduate degrees in Psychology, including a PhD in Psychology in April 1998. She lectured at Rhodes University in the Department of Psychology for many years, leaving in 2008 for the University of Johannesburg. In addition, she had the opportunity to present her work at more than 30 international conferences around the world, and she has been a keynote address speaker at several international psychotherapy conferences.

Research Interest

Zelda G Knight own research is in the area of the mind/subjectivity and intersubjectivity within psychotherapy, specifically relational psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Her research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed international journals as well as in academic books as chapters.
